# STPI to open 12 new Centers of Excellence in the country

The Software Technology Park is all set to open **12 new Centers of Excellence** in the country soon.

These centers of excellence in the Software Technology Park will bring products and solutions to startups in *healthcare, IoT, and smart agriculture*.

Omkar Rai, Director General, Software Technology Park of India, says that these centers of excellence will promote research and product development in the country so that India will emerge as a product making country.

There are already 12 Centers of Excellence in the country, whereas with the opening of 12 more Centers of Excellence, the number of Centers of Excellence controlled by Software Technology Parks in the country will be **24**.

The cities where these 12 new Centers of Excellence are to be opened are as follows – *Patna, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Gangtok, and Itanagar*.

Apart from this, the cities where Center of Excellence for Software Technology Parks already exist are *Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Mohali, Pune, Hyderabad, Gurugram, Lucknow, Guwahati, Shillong, and Imphal*.

In order to increase software exports, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology established a Software Technology Park in the country in **1991**. Software Technology Park started its journey with **3 centers** but now it has a total of **60 centers** in the country out of which **52 centers** are in **Tier 1** and **Tier 2 cities**.

In the year **2019-20**, software technology parks in the country exported software worth **Rs 4.21 trillion**. At the same time, it is being estimated that in the **first half** of the year **2021**, software technology parks of the country will export software worth **Rs 2.49 trillion**.
